More
than 151,000 overseas students came to Australian in 2001/2002
to study in Australian high schools, colleges and universities.
This represented a 4% on the previous year and the numbers
are expected to continue to rise. State government authorities
are taking initiatives to market their states, for example
the Western Australian government is developing an education
export strategy. The Federal department of Immigration & Multicultural
& Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) has also amended regulations
applying to overseas students studying in Australia who wish
to apply for a permanent residency visa after completing their
studies. The changes provide incentives for students to study
in regional areas and also to complete post-graduate qualifications.
